So。。 the reason why I scored this book this low is not because it’s not good。 The reason is that。。 it wasn’t particularly my taste and it was very hard to read。 This book has tons of kanjis and N2 grammar structures but what makes it hard to read is that it is kinda abstract。 I’ve mentioned before that it reminds me of Bruno Schulz works and what I mean by it is the overwhelming usage of magical realism and abstract concepts to progress the plot。 To be honest I wasn’t a fan of Schulz either, thi So。。 the reason why I scored this book this low is not because it’s not good。 The reason is that。。 it wasn’t particularly my taste and it was very hard to read。 This book has tons of kanjis and N2 grammar structures but what makes it hard to read is that it is kinda abstract。 I’ve mentioned before that it reminds me of Bruno Schulz works and what I mean by it is the overwhelming usage of magical realism and abstract concepts to progress the plot。 To be honest I wasn’t a fan of Schulz either, this type of writing is just not my cup of tea。Throughout all of the book author changes the pov pretty much every ~10 pages which is nice, cause we get to know different perspectives but it can be kind of chaotic and I didn’t particularly like any of the characters,,, Which isn’t a problem for me but I just couldn’t make myself care about any of them。 Not to forget that the main male protagonist is just a stalker in my eyes? He’s creepy。 And I do agree that there were some moments that I wasn’t able to fully comprehend (that’s why I give it N1+。 My JP teacher also said that this book is hard even for Japanese ppl), I was just too confused。 (view spoiler)[The first chapter was full of drinking and being under an influence, we also have a guy grabbing one of the main characters and it just。。 triggered me。 Another character saved her but and the whole thing was just kinda brushed over。 The second chapter was better, it took place in a library but it was slow-paced and boring and times。 The third chapter was just pure chaos。 The forth (and the last) chapter。。 let’s say the ending was a summary of what happened in chapter 3 but I didn’t like the end。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

I watched the movie immediately after reading and it was a little different from the book but I loved the movie more ! I think this story works well as an adapted anime rather than a book。 This was very strange and bizarre but at the sametime a nice journey that eventually helps a young woman and a man to come together and fall in love。 In the book, it's written in various periods like months apart but in the movie it's happening in an entire night。 Sadly, I didn't get the whole purpose with the I watched the movie immediately after reading and it was a little different from the book but I loved the movie more ! 3。5This was a wild ride of a book。 I was expecting this book to be focused on only one night, but to my surprise, it actually includes multiple short stories - the stories are so separate that I wouldn't call them chapters。 The connection between each of these stories is the appearance of a quirky female lead (who is really strange but charming, really) and our less likeable male lead who gets dragged into a strange series of events due to his obsession with the former。 Each of the stories is re 3。5This was a wild ride of a book。 I was expecting this book to be focused on only one night, but to my surprise, it actually includes multiple short stories - the stories are so separate that I wouldn't call them chapters。 The connection between each of these stories is the appearance of a quirky female lead (who is really strange but charming, really) and our less likeable male lead who gets dragged into a strange series of events due to his obsession with the former。 Each of the stories is really outlandish and so imaginative。 I really enjoyed the magical realism of the book, and can see how the setting and story would have translated well to a film format。 。。。more

"In closing, I leave you with this:Do all you can and then wait for providence。"A fairly surreal, modern myth, college love story something or other。 Delightful and silly and strange。 Pairs well with the anime adaptation。 Both are masterful expressions of this dreamy tale。 Hope to see Tatami Galaxy translated soon。 "In closing, I leave you with this:Do all you can and then wait for providence。"A fairly surreal, modern myth, college love story something or other。 Delightful and silly and strange。 Pairs well with the anime adaptation。 Both are masterful expressions of this dreamy tale。 Hope to see Tatami Galaxy translated soon。 。。。more

An interesting book。 Very different from Penguin Highway but still quite an intriguing and strange book which I liked。 I loved Mr Higuchi, Mr Rihaku and the Girl the most。 These are great characters。 I also loved the giant papier-mache cat! 'I'm gonna eat your koi!' the lucky cat suddenly said。 Not sure why this stuck with me。。。 The only drawback is that sometimes I could tell if it was the boy or the girl who was telling their part of the story。 An interesting book。 Very different from Penguin Highway but still quite an intriguing and strange book which I liked。 I loved Mr Higuchi, Mr Rihaku and the Girl the most。 These are great characters。 I also loved the giant papier-mache cat! I really liked the movie adaptation of this book, and that's how I picked this book to read hoping to have an even better experience。 Surprisingly the book wasn't as good as the movie, it was quite slow paced and just had a lot going on。 The ending was pretty cute though I really liked the movie adaptation of this book, and that's how I picked this book to read hoping to have an even better experience。 Surprisingly the book wasn't as good as the movie, it was quite slow paced and just had a lot going on。 The ending was pretty cute though 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This had such a nice ending!! Super fun and the dual protagonist structure was really engaging。 I initially started reading just because of the animated short, and the way the book got adapted visually was very interesting to see。In terms of overall structure, the book mostly has around (four?) scenes/arcs overall: the night of drinking in the beginning, the used bookfair, school festival, and the God of Colds。 I think it’s interesting how each arc shows the natural progression of the protagonis This had such a nice ending!! Other than that, I liked the style of this book, and the unique way of characterizing each protagonist。 I’ve read a lot of school festival stories, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen one quite like this。 And the message at the end is optimistic and positive, which I really liked。 。。。more

This is an entertaining, whimsical read。 I appreciated the bits of wisdom and humor tossed together with the nonsense。 I don’t know if I would have loved this book without living in Japan, but for me it hit the spot。 It was just the right amount of engaging and amusing to offer me connection without being bogged down in something distressing。 I had fun reading it and chuckled aloud on many occasions。 Note: I actually haven’t seen the movie yet, but I’ll for sure be checking out the animated adap This is an entertaining, whimsical read。 I appreciated the bits of wisdom and humor tossed together with the nonsense。 I don’t know if I would have loved this book without living in Japan, but for me it hit the spot。 It was just the right amount of engaging and amusing to offer me connection without being bogged down in something distressing。 I had fun reading it and chuckled aloud on many occasions。 Note: I actually haven’t seen the movie yet, but I’ll for sure be checking out the animated adaptation as I’m fairly confident it will be a fun addition。 。。。more

The Night Is Short, Walk on Girl is an essentially simple story。 Boy meets girl。 Boy falls in love with girl。 Boy chases girl。 Girl is oblivious。Simple。 Until you add in the triple-decker train, a tengu demon, and the God of Used Book Fairs。 As in Morimi’s other novel published in English, Penguin Highway, the real in The Night Is Short… is fundamentally magical。More at ReadJapaneseLiterature。com。 The Night Is Short, Walk on Girl is an essentially simple story。 Boy meets girl。 Boy falls in love with girl。 Boy chases girl。 Girl is oblivious。Simple。 Until you add in the triple-decker train, a tengu demon, and the God of Used Book Fairs。 As in Morimi’s other novel published in English, Penguin Highway, the real in The Night Is Short… is fundamentally magical。More at ReadJapaneseLiterature。com。 。。。more

I was intrigued with the cover several years ago and thought it'd be an incredible read。 So when I got the book on hand, I really wanted to read it。The Night Is Short, Walk on Girl is a story about a short black hair maiden in her early days of university and a senior in her club。 This clubmate has a crush in her but has no enough confidence to talk to her, so he makes opportunities to be at the same places with her。 "Do all you can and then wait for providence。 It has 4 main events set in 4 d I was intrigued with the cover several years ago and thought it'd be an incredible read。 So when I got the book on hand, I really wanted to read it。The Night Is Short, Walk on Girl is a story about a short black hair maiden in her early days of university and a senior in her club。 This clubmate has a crush in her but has no enough confidence to talk to her, so he makes opportunities to be at the same places with her。 "Do all you can and then wait for providence。 It has 4 main events set in 4 different seasons。 I think it's a good concept for 'one sided love' since it feels more realistic。 I had a hard time reading the first chapter, following the girl wondering around the town drinking。 But the complicated coincidence in the end of the chapter was smartly funny I laughed。 I like the second story better, where they go to a Used Bookfair only because it's about book! I could see myself walking between the stands mesmerized by how many books are stacked there。 The third story, though I didn't enjoy the play's dialogues but it has an important role here and I like how things turn out here。 It's unthinkable and left me aahh-ing。 The last story。。。 if it happens today, people would be frightened and dying, not because it's winter。 There's an absurd scene in which I think unnecessary yet it's magical realism so everything is possible here。One other funteresting part about this book is that(view spoiler)[ we don't know our main leads names up till the last page。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

"Do what you can, step-by-step。" I didn't know what to make of this at first, but it turned into quite an oddly endearing read。 This is my second Morimi, and I must admit that I do have a weird fondness for his writing。 I can't really describe it, but it's really lovely and lively。 As for the plot here I can't say it drew me in, but the way Morimi leads us through it, makes it kind of irrelevant, because it's written so wonderfully expressive, that it feels like a treat nonetheless。 3。5/5 "Do what you can, step-by-step。" I didn't know what to make of this at first, but it turned into quite an oddly endearing read。 This is my second Morimi, and I must admit that I do have a weird fondness for his writing。 I can't really describe it, but it's really lovely and lively。 As for the plot here I can't say it drew me in, but the way Morimi leads us through it, makes it kind of irrelevant, because it's written so wonderfully expressive, that it feels like a treat nonetheless。 3。5/5 。。。more

I bought this book after watching the movie three times because I just had to know what sort of prose was developed into such a wonderful movie。 Turns out it's prose that's extremely easy to read, being broken up into a lot of small sections, alternating the perspective between a male upperclassman and his crush。 You have to hand it to Tomihiko Morimi, for an author who never mentions either of the protagonists' names, he did a good job distinguishing the two perspectives。I especially loved the I bought this book after watching the movie three times because I just had to know what sort of prose was developed into such a wonderful movie。 Turns out it's prose that's extremely easy to read, being broken up into a lot of small sections, alternating the perspective between a male upperclassman and his crush。 You have to hand it to Tomihiko Morimi, for an author who never mentions either of the protagonists' names, he did a good job distinguishing the two perspectives。I especially loved the upperclassman's characterization。 As a reader, you can begin to see an interesting dynamic forming between him and his crush, where they are opposites, in a way。 She's optimistic to a fault while he's prone to complaining about the sad state of his life。 The upperclassman adds a lot of humor to the story with lines like this:"Wise readers, how long it has been since we last met? I hope you are well。 The reason I'm interrupting now is that I imagine you've all forgotten about me, standing despondently on Kiyamachi, by this point。 Please shower me in more of your overflowing love。"I can't help but feel a little bad for him, seeing him as a "pebble by the wayside," which makes the ending all the more enjoyable (even if he is a little self-centered)。 And anyway, who doesn't love to root for an underdog? This is the sort of book you can read again and again and extract new details each time。 There's a lot that unravels through the four chapters but, at least for me, it was easy to follow along, especially after reading it the first time。 。。。more

Would have given it a 3。5 if GR had decimal ratings。 I enjoy the light-hearted surreal atmosphere of the novel but is a bit of slog to get through and is a fundamentally pretty dull romcom about two college students

2。5/5starsFirst read of 2021 and。。。 An unfortunate 2。5 stars。Was really looking forward to this one, but unlike the cover, this was not very fantastic at all。 Rather than being magical or surreal or interesting, we basically see the same story 4 times and watch characters get intoxicated and get into weird situations because of it。 That's about it。。。 Which is not necessarily a story I wanted to read 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2。5/5starsFirst read of 2021 and。。。 An unfortunate 2。5 stars。Was really looking forward to this one, but unlike the cover, this was not very fantastic at all。 Rather than being magical or surreal or interesting, we basically see the same story 4 times and watch characters get intoxicated and get into weird situations because of it。 That's about it。。。 Which is not necessarily a story I wanted to read 🤷🏻‍♀️ 。。。more

3。5/5Quirky with prose/language that's just fun and a full romp。Will say that I really hope Japanese media stops depicting sexual assault in "funny" ways because it's。。。 just not good。 Other than THAT element, the rest of the novel is creative and weird and dare I use the word charming。This is a case where the film is better than the novel。 Watching the movie again as its one of my favorites for The New Year。 3。5/5Quirky with prose/language that's just fun and a full romp。Will say that I really hope Japanese media stops depicting sexual assault in "funny" ways because it's。。。 just not good。 Other than THAT element, the rest of the novel is creative and weird and dare I use the word charming。This is a case where the film is better than the novel。 Watching the movie again as its one of my favorites for The New Year。 。。。more
